Jim Corbett Park Safari
Jim Corbett is one of the most famous wildlife reserves in India and the oldest national park in the country. It is located in the state of Uttarakhand, mainly in the districts of Nainital and Pauri Garhwal. The park was established in 1936 as Hailey National Park and later renamed after the famous hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett. It is widely known for its rich biodiversity and for being one of the best places in India to see the Royal Bengal Tiger in the wild.
Jim Corbett covers an area of about 520 square kilometers and is part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve. The park consists of different landscapes such as dense forests, grasslands, hills, river belts, and wetlands, which create a perfect habitat for a variety of wildlife species. The beautiful Ramganga River flows through the park and plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem and providing water for animals.
The park is home to more than 600 species of birds, around 50 species of mammals, and many reptiles and amphibians. Some of the most commonly found animals include the Royal Bengal Tiger, Asian elephants, leopards, sloth bears, wild boars, sambar deer, spotted deer (chital), and gharial crocodiles. Because of its rich wildlife and natural beauty, the park attracts thousands of tourists, wildlife photographers, and nature lovers every year.
Jim Corbett is also a key part of Project Tiger, which was launched in 1973 to protect the decreasing population of tigers in India. Due to strong conservation efforts, the park has become one of the most successful tiger reserves in the country.
Tourists can explore the park through jeep safaris and canter safaris organized in different tourism zones such as Dhikala Zone, Bijrani Zone, Jhirna Zone, Dhela Zone, and Durga Devi Zone. Among these, Dhikala Zone is the most popular because of its vast grasslands and higher chances of wildlife sightings.
The best time to visit Jim Corbett is from November to June, when the weather is pleasant and wildlife sightings are more common. During the monsoon season (July to October) some zones remain closed due to heavy rainfall.
Today, Jim Corbett is not only an important wildlife sanctuary but also a major eco-tourism destination in India, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience nature, wildlife, and adventure in the foothills of the Himalayas.
How to Reach Jim Corbett
Jim Corbett is one of the most popular wildlife destinations in India and is well connected by road, rail, and air. The nearest town to the park is Ramnagar, which serves as the main gateway for visitors entering the park.
By Road
Traveling by road is the most convenient way to reach Corbett. Ramnagar is approximately 250 km from Delhi, and the journey usually takes around 5–6 hours depending on traffic and route. The drive passes through scenic towns and forested landscapes, making it a pleasant road trip. Regular buses operate from Delhi, Haldwani, Moradabad, and Nainital to Ramnagar. Private taxis and self-drive vehicles are also popular choices for travelers seeking flexibility and comfort.
By Train
The nearest railway station is Ramnagar Railway Station, located about 12 km from Jim Corbett. It is well connected to Delhi and other northern cities through trains such as the Ranikhet Express and Corbett Link Express. After reaching Ramnagar, visitors can easily hire taxis, autos, or resort transfers to reach safari zones and nearby resorts.
By Air
The closest airport to Corbett is Pantnagar Airport, located around 80 km from the park. The airport has limited flights mainly connecting with Delhi. From Pantnagar, taxis are available to reach Ramnagar in about 2 hours.
